A sampling of spaces we’ve edited—and the thinking behind each one.

THE OVER-STIMULATED EDIT

A Craft Studio, Spokane

What wasn’t working: access, identity, function, clutter, the too-much-stuff factor

What we reconsidered: furniture placement and function, re-inventing use of current storage containers, reducing “stuff” by counseling through the why behind it, and giving the space a clear identity.

How it works now: The space went from “I haven’t been in this space in 5 years because I can’t move in it” to “I can’t wait to start a new project. It’s just gorgeous!”

The Edit: There were some awkward columns in this anteroom off a casual living area. The client had worked around them with a “wall” of filing cabinets. Over time, the space lost its function and became a catch-all while she created a new craft space upstairs. We talked through what still needed to happen here, then built a plan using storage and furnishings already in the home. The result was a singular space that still carried the owner’s vibe, but invited her back in.

THE RESTORATIVE EDIT

An Everything Space, Spokane

What wasn’t working: cleanliness, clutter, function, inventory

What we reconsidered: what needed to go, what needed to stay, and how existing systems could work again

How it works now: The space went from “I can’t take one more day of this” to “You quite literally saved my life!”

The Edit: After months of illness, this office, studio and project space—and several others in the home—had simply become more than the client could physically manage. She gave us carte blanche. Instead of reinventing her home, we worked within the systems, furnishings and storage she already knew. We cleaned deeply, culled carefully and restored function without editing away the things that made the space hers.

THE UTILITY EDIT

A Garden Shed, Post Falls

What wasn’t working: function, organization, inventory control

What we reconsidered: interior layout, storage, function and a few exterior details

How it works now: This space went from “I’m so embarrassed,” to “I can’t believe all the same stuff is in here!”

The Edit: Sheds, garages and spare rooms have a way of becoming landing places. Open the door, set something down and get back to life. This garden shed had reached that point. We pulled everything out, reconsidered what belonged, and rebuilt the space around how the client actually used it—with a little room in the budget to make the outside feel cared for, too.
